I agree with the Hemmingway/Fitzgerald succinctness giving way to more verbose writing. It's been that way since the 2000s. I think we tried to get back to the brevity in the 2010s, but the result was usually kind of lame (at least, when I tried it) so you'll now find people like me trying be, as you said, a hybrid as well.
I think novellas could be more popular on Substack because it's not quite so intimidating as longer novel serials.
And Ray -- you're so right about adding to the discourse for engagement.
And Rebecca, you're a hero for what you did for that little girl. Thanks for the praise on my stories!!!
This was good. U R becoming the LARRY KING of Substack. Meanwhile, I keep saying the future of Writing is SHORT SHIT...ala BOOKS, more NOVELLAS....CHAPISODIC joints.
Listened to this last night. Thanks, Ray and Rebecca, for a really lively and wide-ranging discussion on writing and on life. Great to hear your voice, Rebecca! I was gripped by both your thoughts about what actually went through your heads when you had near-death experiences. I've already read Rebecca's compelling writing about Storm Helene, but will look up yours about the flight, Ray. (Not good when you see a flight attendant praying!) I'm a new reader to your Stack.) I'll also dip back into your other podcasts.
Yes to memoir, Rebecca – I hope it is making a comeback! And thanks for the shout out, alongside those other amazing writers! I love to read about real lives on Substack (and in books).
I felt like I did your stack a disservice by stumbling in the description. Podcasts and talking are so on the spot so I'm glad you were happy about it. The chatting was so lovely. Thank you!
I only got the one class with him the rest of the classes were taught by his screenwriter Andy Mingo. And you got a gloves off? oh that musta been cool as hell. Can you send me a link to the story?
Thank you @Marc Arginteanu for sharing!

🙏
It’s definitely a part of the future IMO
💯
I agree, I noticed I get more engagement with my microfiction than with my longer work.
this beast of a thing. trying to figure it out. godspeed!
People enjoy shorter content.
Two of my favorite people! Came for Becca’s Al Pacino in Central Park story, stayed for everything else.
Did you catch the part where I said we need a memoir from you?
I did haha. I’m thinking about it. Just gotta figure out what to do with the pesky lawsuits that’ll probably come along with it.
Yeah so that’s why I use rockstar names and such and put in a slight bit of fiction.
This was so much fun…and engaging.
Thank youuuu
Another good one Ray. Can’t wait to see who’s next!
Thanks for listening!

I would likely stumble if asked to describe my own Substack, Rebecca! Truly, thanks for the recommendation.
I hope I can take an in-person writing class by Chuck one day. He gave me a lot of good advice when he did his gloves off on me.
